EMPAGLIFLOZIN
Empagliflozin is an SGLT2 inhibitor. It lowers blood sugar by helping the kidneys pass excess glucose out in the urine, and it also has recognised benefits for the heart and kidneys.
What Empagliflozin Is Used For
- Type 2 diabetes in adults
- Reducing cardiovascular risk in people with heart disease
- Heart failure and chronic kidney disease, as advised by a specialist
Common Side Effects
- Genital or urinary fungal infections
- Passing urine more often
- Thirst
Precautions
Drink enough water and pay attention to personal hygiene, as the extra sugar in the urine makes thrush and urinary infections more likely. Seek medical help urgently if you feel very unwell with nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain or unusually deep breathing, even if your sugar reading looks normal. This medicine is usually paused before surgery or during serious illness.
