Verteporfin is a medication used in photodynamic therapy (PDT) to treat certain eye conditions, particularly wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and certain types of macular edema.

In photodynamic therapy, verteporfin is injected into a vein and then activated by a specific wavelength of light directed into the eye. This activation causes verteporfin to produce a type of oxygen that can destroy abnormal blood vessels in the eye without causing damage to surrounding healthy tissue.
