Acetylcysteine loosens and thins mucus, making a chesty cough easier to clear. It is also used in hospital as an antidote in certain overdoses.

Precautions

As a mucus-thinner, acetylcysteine helps clear phlegm rather than suppressing the cough. Tell your doctor if you have, or have had, a stomach ulcer, or if you have asthma. See a doctor if a cough lasts more than a couple of weeks or comes with high fever or breathlessness.
