Terlipressin is a synthetic hormone similar to vasopressin. Given by injection in hospital, it narrows blood vessels in the gut and reduces blood flow to the liver's veins.

What Terlipressin Is Used For

Bleeding from swollen veins in the food pipe (oesophageal varices)
Hepatorenal syndrome (kidney failure linked to liver disease)
Some types of severe low blood pressure, under specialist care

Common Side Effects

Pale skin and abdominal cramps
Headache
High blood pressure
Slow heart rate
Low sodium levels

Precautions

Terlipressin is used only in hospital with close monitoring of heart rhythm, blood pressure, oxygen and salts. It is not suitable in pregnancy. Doctors take extra care in people with heart disease, poor circulation or breathing problems.
