Loster 20mg Tablet contains the active ingredient rosuvastatin, which belongs to a class of medications known as statins. It is primarily used for the treatment of high cholesterol levels and to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke in patients at high risk of cardiovascular disease.
Components:
- Rosuvastatin: Rosuvastatin works by inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which plays a key role in the production of cholesterol in the liver. By blocking this enzyme, rosuvastatin reduces the synthesis of cholesterol and increases the clearance of LDL cholesterol from the bloodstream, thereby lowering total cholesterol levels and LDL cholesterol levels (“bad” cholesterol).
Uses:
- High Cholesterol: Loster 20mg Tablet is indicated for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol levels) in adults and children aged 10 to 17 years.
- Cardiovascular Risk Reduction: It is also used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attack, stroke, and revascularization procedures in patients with established cardiovascular disease or those at high risk of cardiovascular disease.
Dosage and Administration:
- The recommended starting dose of Loster 20mg Tablet for most patients is 10 mg once daily, taken orally with or without food.
- The dosage may be adjusted based on individual response and tolerability, up to a maximum dose of 40 mg once daily.
- For patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance <30 mL/min), the recommended starting dose is 5 mg once daily, with careful monitoring of renal function and lipid levels.
- Loster 20mg Tablet should be taken regularly at the same time each day to maintain consistent blood levels of the medication.
- It may take several weeks for the full therapeutic effects of rosuvastatin to be realized. Patients should continue taking the medication as prescribed even if they start to feel better.
Precautions:
- Liver Function: Liver function tests should be performed before initiation of treatment with rosuvastatin and periodically thereafter to monitor for signs of hepatotoxicity.
- Muscle Toxicity: Rosuvastatin may rarely cause myopathy (muscle damage) or rhabdomyolysis (severe muscle breakdown), especially at high doses or in combination with certain medications. Patients should be advised to report any unexplained muscle pain, weakness, or tenderness promptly.
- Pregnancy and Lactation: Rosuvastatin is contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to the potential risk of fetal harm and lack of safety data in lactating women.
- Concomitant Medications: Rosuvastatin may interact with other medications, including cyclosporine, gemfibrozil, certain HIV protease inhibitors, and certain hepatitis C virus (HCV) protease inhibitors. Healthcare providers should review the patient’s medication list for potential drug interactions before prescribing rosuvastatin.
Side Effects:
- Common side effects of Loster 20mg Tablet may include headache, dizziness, constipation, nausea, abdominal pain, muscle pain, and weakness.
- Less common but potentially serious side effects may include liver dysfunction, myopathy, rhabdomyolysis, and an increased risk of diabetes.
Storage:
- Store Loster 20mg Tablet at room temperature (20-25°C) away from moisture and heat.
- Keep out of reach of children and pets.
- Do not use rosuvastatin if the packaging is damaged or if the tablets appear discolored or deteriorated.
