SPARFLOXACIN
Sparfloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that stops bacteria from copying their DNA. It stays active in the body for a long time, so it is taken once daily, and it is reserved for infections where simpler antibiotics are unsuitable.
What Sparfloxacin Is Used For
- Community acquired pneumonia and chest infections
- Chronic bronchitis flare ups
- Some skin and urinary infections
- Selected resistant infections on medical advice
Common Side Effects
- Marked sensitivity to sunlight
- Nausea and loose motions
- Headache and dizziness
- Tendon pain
Precautions
Sun sensitivity with this antibiotic is pronounced, so stay out of direct sun and use protection during the course and for several days after. Stop and contact your doctor if you develop tendon pain, particularly at the heel, or any new numbness or tingling. It can affect heart rhythm, so mention any heart condition or other medicines. Space it from antacids, iron and calcium by several hours.
