Tofacitinib
Tofacitinib blocks Janus kinase enzymes inside immune cells, interrupting the signals that drive inflammation. It is a targeted tablet treatment used when standard disease modifying medicines have not controlled the condition.

Common Side Effects
- Increased risk of infection, including chest and urinary infections
- Headache
- Raised cholesterol
- Loose motions and nausea
Precautions
Screening for tuberculosis and hepatitis is done before starting, and blood counts, liver tests and cholesterol are monitored during treatment. Report fever, cough, night sweats or any shingles rash promptly. Live vaccines must be avoided. Discuss heart disease, clot history, smoking and cancer history with your specialist, as these affect whether it is suitable.
