Aescin, also written escin, is the active fraction of horse chestnut seed. It tightens the walls of small veins and reduces how much fluid leaks out of them, which eases the heaviness and swelling of poor venous circulation.

What Aescin Is Used For

Chronic venous insufficiency, with aching heavy legs and ankle swelling
Varicose vein symptoms
Piles
Bruising and swelling after injury or surgery, in gel or tablet form

Common Side Effects

Nausea or stomach discomfort
Headache
Dizziness
Itching where a gel is applied

Precautions

Take tablets with food to reduce stomach upset. It can add to the effect of blood thinners, so tell your doctor if you take warfarin or aspirin. It is not recommended in pregnancy or with kidney or liver disease without advice. Compression stockings, walking and leg elevation remain the mainstay of vein treatment. Sudden calf pain, warmth and swelling in one leg needs urgent assessment.
