AMIKACIN

Amikacin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic given by injection for serious infections, usually in hospital. It is reserved for infections that need a strong injectable antibiotic.

What Amikacin Is Used For

• Serious chest, blood and abdominal infections
• Complicated urinary tract infections
• Infections resistant to other antibiotics

Common Side Effects

• Pain at the injection site
• Effects on hearing or balance with prolonged use
• Effects on the kidneys

Precautions

Amikacin is given and monitored by medical staff, who may check kidney function and blood levels during treatment. Tell the team about any hearing problems or kidney disease before treatment. It is used only for the period the infection requires.
