AMIODARONE
Amiodarone steadies the electrical signalling in the heart and is used for rhythm disturbances that other medicines have not controlled. It is powerful and effective, and it needs regular monitoring because it builds up in the body over months.
What Amiodarone Is Used For
- Atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter
- Serious ventricular rhythm disturbances
- Maintaining a normal rhythm after it has been restored
Common Side Effects
- Nausea and metallic taste
- Sensitivity to sunlight, sometimes with a grey blue skin tinge
- Thyroid problems, both under and over active
- Tremor, sleep disturbance or tingling in the hands and feet
Precautions
Thyroid, liver and lung function are checked before and during treatment, and eye checks are advised on long term use. Use sunblock and cover up outdoors. Grapefruit juice should be avoided, and amiodarone interacts strongly with warfarin and digoxin, so never add a new medicine without telling your doctor. Report new breathlessness or a dry cough promptly.
