Atomoxetine treats ADHD by increasing noradrenaline signalling in the brain. Unlike stimulant treatments it is not a controlled drug and it works around the clock rather than in doses timed to the school or work day.

What Atomoxetine Is Used For

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children, adolescents and adults
ADHD where stimulants are unsuitable or not tolerated
ADHD alongside anxiety or tic disorders, on specialist advice

Common Side Effects

Reduced appetite and stomach upset
Nausea, particularly at the start
Drowsiness or trouble sleeping
Dry mouth and a faster heartbeat

Precautions

Full benefit takes four to six weeks, so it needs patience. Growth, weight, blood pressure and pulse are monitored in children. Report yellowing of the eyes, dark urine or upper abdominal pain, and report any new agitation or thoughts of self harm, which need prompt review. Do not stop or change the dose without the prescribing doctor.
