Crotamiton is a cream or lotion that relieves itching and has some activity against the scabies mite. It is often used after scabies treatment to settle the itch that continues even once the mites are gone.

What Crotamiton Is Used For

  • Itching from eczema, dermatitis and dry skin
  • Itch that persists after scabies treatment
  • Scabies, as a secondary option
  • Itchy insect bites

Common Side Effects

  • Local irritation or stinging
  • Redness
  • Rash, uncommonly

Precautions

Keep it away from the eyes, mouth and broken or weeping skin. For scabies, permethrin is the usual first choice, and all household members need treating at the same time with bedding and clothes washed hot, or the infestation returns. Itching can persist for two to four weeks after successful scabies treatment, which does not mean the treatment failed.
