DINOPROSTONE
Dinoprostone is a prostaglandin used in maternity units to soften and open the cervix when labour needs to be started. It is placed by a doctor or midwife as a gel or vaginal insert and is never a medicine to be used at home.
What Dinoprostone Is Used For
- Ripening the cervix before induction of labour
- Starting labour when continuing the pregnancy carries a risk
- Selected obstetric procedures decided by the treating team
Common Side Effects
- Cramping and contraction pain
- Nausea or vomiting
- Fever or flushing
- Changes in the babys heart rate, which is why monitoring is continuous
Precautions
Dinoprostone is used only in a facility where the mother and baby can be monitored and where a caesarean can be done if needed. It is not suitable for everyone, including some women with a previous uterine scar. It needs cold storage and is handled by the hospital team.
