Dioctahedral smectite is a natural clay that coats the lining of the gut and binds toxins, bile salts and some bacteria. It firms up the stool without slowing the bowel down, which makes it usable in children as well as adults.

What Dioctahedral Smectite Is Used For

  • Acute diarrhoea in adults and children
  • Diarrhoea related to infection or food upset
  • Chronic diarrhoea and irritable bowel symptoms
  • Heartburn and oesophageal discomfort, in some formulations

Common Side Effects

  • Constipation if continued too long
  • Bloating
  • Nausea

Precautions

Rehydration is the treatment that actually saves lives in diarrhoea, so ORS comes first and this comes second. Space it at least two hours from other medicines, because the clay binds them too and reduces their absorption. Seek medical care for blood in the stool, high fever, persistent vomiting, or signs of dehydration in a child such as sunken eyes, no tears or reduced urine.
