Eplerenone blocks aldosterone, a hormone that makes the body hold on to salt and water and that contributes to scarring of the heart muscle. It improves survival in heart failure and after certain heart attacks.

What Eplerenone Is Used For

  • Heart failure with reduced pumping function
  • After a heart attack with heart failure
  • Resistant high blood pressure

Common Side Effects

  • Raised potassium levels
  • Dizziness
  • Tiredness
  • Raised kidney blood tests

Precautions

Potassium and kidney function must be checked before starting and regularly after, because a high potassium level is dangerous and causes no symptoms until it affects the heart. Avoid potassium supplements and salt substitutes unless your doctor approves. Compared with spironolactone it is much less likely to cause breast tenderness. Report muscle weakness, numbness or a slow irregular pulse.
