Glibenclamide belongs to the sulfonylurea group of diabetes medicines. It helps the pancreas release more of its own insulin and is taken with meals.

What Glibenclamide Is Used For

  • Type 2 diabetes in adults
  • Often combined with metformin when needed

Common Side Effects

  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia)
  • Weight gain
  • Nausea

Precautions

The main thing to watch for is low blood sugar, which can last longer with glibenclamide than some other diabetes medicines. Do not skip meals, and learn the warning signs: sweating, shakiness, hunger and confusion. Older adults and those with kidney problems need closer monitoring.
