Lindane, also called gamma benzene hexachloride, is applied to the skin to kill scabies mites and lice. It is effective but is absorbed through the skin and can affect the nervous system, so safer treatments are now preferred first.

Skin irritation, dryness and itching

Fits, rarely and with excessive use

Precautions

Permethrin is the usual first choice for scabies and lice and is safer, particularly for children. Lindane must not be used on infants, in pregnancy or breastfeeding, on broken or extensively inflamed skin, or repeatedly. Apply once as directed and wash off after the stated time, never leaving it on longer. Treat all household contacts at the same time and wash bedding and clothing hot.
