LITHIUM CARBONATE
Lithium carbonate is a mood stabiliser and remains one of the most effective treatments for bipolar disorder. It reduces both the highs and the lows and has good evidence for lowering the risk of suicide in this condition.
What Lithium Carbonate Is Used For
- Bipolar disorder, for acute mania and long term prevention
- Recurrent depression, as an add on treatment
- Reducing relapse in mood disorders
Common Side Effects
- Increased thirst and passing more urine
- Fine tremor of the hands
- Weight gain
- Nausea and loose motions early on
Precautions
The safe range is narrow, so regular blood levels along with kidney and thyroid tests are essential. Dehydration, vomiting, fever, a low salt diet, ibuprofen type painkillers and some blood pressure medicines can all push the level into the toxic range. Coarse tremor, vomiting, drowsiness, slurred speech or unsteadiness needs urgent medical attention. Keep fluid intake steady and never stop it suddenly.
