METHYLDOPA
Methyldopa lowers blood pressure by acting on the brain to reduce the nerve signals that tighten blood vessels. It is an older medicine, and its long record of safe use in pregnancy keeps it in regular use today.
What Methyldopa Is Used For
- High blood pressure in pregnancy
- General high blood pressure
- Pregnancy induced hypertension, on obstetric advice
Common Side Effects
- Drowsiness, especially in the first days
- Dry mouth
- Dizziness on standing
- Headache and tiredness
Precautions
Drowsiness usually improves after the first week, so it helps to start with the larger part of the day at bedtime if the doctor agrees. Liver tests and blood counts are checked periodically, since liver inflammation and anaemia occur rarely. Report yellowing of the eyes, fever or unusual tiredness. Do not stop it suddenly, and in pregnancy never adjust it without your obstetrician.
