METHYLESTRADIOL
Methylestradiol is a synthetic oestrogen, a laboratory modified form of the natural female hormone estradiol. Synthetic oestrogens are used where oestrogen levels need replacing or where the menstrual cycle needs controlling, and they are almost always combined with a progestogen.
What Synthetic Oestrogens Are Used For
- Hormone replacement for menopausal symptoms
- Combined hormonal contraception
- Irregular or absent periods caused by low oestrogen
- Certain hormone related conditions, on specialist advice
Common Side Effects
- Breast tenderness
- Nausea
- Headache
- Fluid retention and breakthrough bleeding
Precautions
Oestrogens raise the risk of blood clots, and that risk is higher with smoking, obesity, migraine with aura, or a personal or family history of clots, so a proper assessment comes before a prescription. Report calf pain or swelling, chest pain, breathlessness, severe headache or sudden visual change immediately. They must not be used in pregnancy or with certain cancers, and they need review at least once a year.
