Methylprednisolone acetate is a corticosteroid in a depot form, meaning it releases slowly from where it is injected. That gives lasting anti inflammatory effect in a joint, in soft tissue or throughout the body.

What It Is Used For

Injection into an inflamed joint in arthritis
Bursitis, tendon and soft tissue inflammation
Severe allergic reactions and asthma flare ups
Inflammatory and autoimmune conditions

Facial flushing for a day or two
Temporary rise in blood sugar
Pain or thinning of tissue at the injection site
Sleep disturbance and mood change

Precautions

Joint injections are limited in how often they can be repeated, since frequent steroid into the same joint damages cartilage. It is given by a doctor under sterile conditions, and increasing pain, swelling, redness and fever afterwards must be reported urgently as it can signal infection. People with diabetes should expect higher readings for several days and monitor accordingly.
