Sulbutiamine is a modified form of vitamin B1 designed to cross into the brain more readily than thiamine itself. It is used for fatigue, particularly the mental tiredness that lingers after illness.

What Sulbutiamine Is Used For

  • Fatigue and low energy, including after illness
  • Difficulty concentrating and mental tiredness
  • Support in thiamine deficiency
  • Convalescence, on medical advice

Common Side Effects

  • Trouble sleeping if taken late in the day
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Restlessness or irritability

Precautions

Take it earlier in the day so sleep is not disturbed. It is intended for short courses rather than indefinite use, and tolerance to the effect is reported. Persistent fatigue deserves proper investigation, since anaemia, thyroid disease, diabetes, vitamin D or B12 deficiency and depression are far more common explanations and each needs its own treatment.
