Sodium hyaluronate is the salt form of hyaluronic acid, a substance the body already makes to hold water in tissue and to cushion joints. In medicine it is used where that natural lubrication has thinned out.

What Sodium Hyaluronate Is Used For

  • Dry, gritty eyes, as lubricating drops
  • Eye surgery, where it protects the tissues
  • Knee osteoarthritis, as an injection given by a doctor
  • Wound dressings and skin preparations

Common Side Effects

  • Brief blurring after eye drops
  • Mild stinging on application
  • Temporary pain or swelling after a joint injection

Precautions

With eye drops, do not touch the dropper tip to the eye or lashes, and remove soft contact lenses first unless the product says otherwise. Preservative free single use vials suit people who need drops many times a day. Joint injections are given only by a doctor under sterile conditions.
