Urea in skin products does two things at once. It draws water into the skin and holds it there, and at higher strengths it loosens the bonds between hardened dead cells, which softens thick, cracked skin.

What Urea Preparations Are Used For

  • Very dry, rough or cracked skin, especially on heels and elbows
  • Thickened skin and calluses
  • Eczema and psoriasis, as a moisturiser
  • Cracked heels and dry skin in diabetes, on advice

Common Side Effects

  • Stinging or burning, particularly on cracked skin
  • Redness
  • Itching on first applications

Precautions

Lower strengths hydrate, while higher strengths soften hard skin, so match the product to the problem. It stings on broken or fissured skin, which usually settles as the skin improves. People with diabetes should have foot problems, cracks or ulcers assessed rather than self treated, since foot infections can progress quickly. Avoid the eyes and mucous membranes.
