Carica papaya leaf extract is taken widely in this region during dengue fever, on the belief that it helps the platelet count recover. Some studies suggest a faster rise in platelets, though the evidence remains limited and it does not treat the infection itself.

What It Is Used For

  • Supportive use during dengue fever
  • Traditional use as a digestive and general tonic
  • Part of herbal syrups and tablets

Common Side Effects

  • Nausea and stomach discomfort
  • Bitter taste
  • Loose motions
  • Allergic reaction, uncommonly

Precautions

Dengue is managed by fluids, rest, paracetamol for fever and close monitoring of platelets and warning signs, and this extract does not replace any of that. Avoid ibuprofen, aspirin and other anti inflammatories in dengue, as they increase bleeding risk. Severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding gums, black stools, restlessness or a sudden drop in temperature with cold clammy skin needs hospital care immediately.
