Alfuzosin relaxes the muscle in the prostate and bladder neck so urine flows more freely. It improves the symptoms of an enlarged prostate rather than shrinking the gland, and the effect is usually felt within a couple of weeks.

Weak stream, hesitancy and dribbling
Frequent urination, including at night
Urgency and incomplete emptying
Helping pass a stone from the lower ureter, on medical advice

Dizziness, especially on standing
Headache
Tiredness
Blocked nose

Precautions

The first dose can drop blood pressure, so take it after a meal and stand up slowly for the first few days. Tell an eye surgeon before cataract surgery that you take it, as it affects the iris during the operation. Do not combine it with erectile dysfunction medicines without medical advice. Prostate symptoms should be assessed first, since other conditions cause the same complaints.
