Ascorbyl Palmitate
Ascorbyl palmitate is vitamin C joined to a fatty acid, which makes it oil soluble and far more stable than plain ascorbic acid. That stability is why it appears in creams and oils, where ordinary vitamin C would oxidise quickly.
What Ascorbyl Palmitate Is Used For
- Antioxidant support in serums, creams and oils
- Brightening and evening out skin tone
- An antioxidant preservative in supplements and foods
- Formulations for sensitive skin that cannot tolerate stronger vitamin C
Common Side Effects
- Mild irritation or redness in sensitive skin
- Blocked pores in very oily skin
- Contact allergy, uncommonly
Precautions
It is gentler than L ascorbic acid but also weaker, so results are slower and subtler. Patch test on the inner forearm before using a new product on the face. Store the product away from heat and direct light, and stop using it if the colour darkens noticeably. Daily sunscreen is what protects any brightening result.
