BACITRACIN AND NEOMYCIN
Bacitracin and neomycin are two antibiotics combined in a topical ointment or powder. Together they cover a wider range of skin bacteria than either alone, and they are applied directly to the affected area.
What This Ointment Is Used For
- Infected cuts, grazes and minor wounds
- Impetigo and infected insect bites
- Preventing infection in minor burns
- Dressings after minor procedures
Common Side Effects
- Local itching or redness
- Contact allergy, which neomycin causes fairly often
- Burning where applied
Precautions
Stop if the area becomes more red and itchy after a few days, as that often means allergy to the neomycin rather than a worsening infection. Do not use it on large areas, deep wounds or broken skin over a long period, since neomycin absorbed through damaged skin can affect hearing and kidneys. Spreading redness, fever or pus needs a doctor and probably oral antibiotics.
