BENZALKONIUM CHLORIDE
Benzalkonium chloride is an antiseptic that disrupts the outer membrane of bacteria. It is used to clean skin and minor wounds, and it is also the preservative that keeps many eye drops, nasal sprays and lotions sterile after opening.
What Benzalkonium Chloride Is Used For
- Cleaning minor cuts, grazes and burns
- Antiseptic solutions, wipes and hand products
- Preservative in eye drops, nasal sprays and creams
- Some throat lozenges and mouth preparations
Common Side Effects
- Stinging on broken skin
- Dryness or irritation with repeated use
- Eye irritation with long term use of preserved drops
Precautions
Keep it out of the eyes unless it is part of a product made for them. If you use eye drops many times a day or for months, preservative free versions are gentler on the eye surface. Do not use antiseptic on deep, dirty or animal bite wounds without medical advice, and stop if a rash develops.
