CIMETIDINE
Cimetidine was the first of the H2 blockers, which reduce stomach acid by blocking histamine signals to the acid producing cells. It has largely been replaced by newer options, but it is still used and is still effective.
What Cimetidine Is Used For
- Stomach and duodenal ulcers
- Acid reflux and heartburn
- Protecting the stomach lining during treatment with irritant medicines
- Conditions with excess acid production
Common Side Effects
- Headache and dizziness
- Loose motions
- Tiredness
- Breast tenderness or enlargement in men with prolonged use
Precautions
Cimetidine interferes with the liver enzymes that process many other medicines, including warfarin, phenytoin and theophylline, so tell your doctor everything you take. Ulcer symptoms with weight loss, vomiting, difficulty swallowing or black stools need investigation rather than acid tablets. Helicobacter pylori is a common cause of ulcers in Pakistan and needs specific treatment.
