DANAZOL
Danazol suppresses the hormone signals from the pituitary gland that drive the menstrual cycle. That quietens tissue which responds to those hormones, which is why it is used in endometriosis and in some breast conditions.
What Danazol Is Used For
- Endometriosis and the pain that comes with it
- Fibrocystic breast disease and breast pain
- Hereditary angioedema
- Heavy menstrual bleeding, in selected cases
Common Side Effects
- Weight gain and fluid retention
- Acne and oily skin
- Irregular periods or no periods during treatment
- Voice deepening and increased body hair, which may not fully reverse
Precautions
Danazol must not be taken in pregnancy, and a non hormonal method of contraception is needed throughout treatment. Report any deepening of the voice promptly, as that change can be permanent. Liver function is monitored, and yellowing of the eyes or abdominal pain must be reported. It is prescribed for defined courses rather than indefinitely.
