Dosulepin, spelled dosulpin on some packs, is a tricyclic antidepressant. It lifts mood and is sedating, and at lower doses it is used for chronic pain and sleep, although it is prescribed more cautiously now than in the past.

  • Depression, particularly with anxiety or poor sleep
  • Chronic pain conditions
  • Preventing tension headache
  • Sleep difficulty linked to pain, on medical advice

Common Side Effects

  • Drowsiness, so it is usually taken at night
  • Dry mouth and constipation
  • Blurred vision
  • Weight gain and dizziness on standing

Precautions

This medicine is dangerous in overdose and affects the heart rhythm, so it is prescribed carefully and must be stored securely away from children. Do not stop it suddenly after regular use. Avoid alcohol, and tell your doctor about heart disease, glaucoma or difficulty passing urine before starting.
