FOLLITROPIN
Follitropin is a laboratory made form of follicle stimulating hormone. Given by injection under the skin, it stimulates the ovaries to develop follicles, and in men it supports sperm production. It is used only within a fertility programme.
What Follitropin Is Used For
- Stimulating ovulation in women who are not ovulating
- Controlled ovarian stimulation for IVF
- Supporting sperm production in certain hormone deficiencies
Common Side Effects
- Reaction at the injection site
- Abdominal bloating and discomfort
- Headache and mood changes
- Ovarian hyperstimulation, which needs monitoring
Precautions
Treatment is guided by ultrasound scans and blood tests, and the timing and dose are set by the fertility specialist. Report severe abdominal pain and swelling, marked breathlessness, vomiting or a sharp drop in the amount of urine passed, as these can signal hyperstimulation. It needs cold storage. Multiple pregnancy is a real possibility and is discussed before starting.
