Huperzia
Huperzia serrata is a club moss, and the active compound taken from it, huperzine A, slows the breakdown of acetylcholine, a messenger involved in memory. It appears in nootropic and memory support supplements.
What Huperzia Is Taken For
- Memory and concentration support
- Part of nootropic and study formulations
- Traditional use in Chinese herbal medicine
Common Side Effects
- Nausea and stomach discomfort
- Sweating
- Slow heartbeat
- Restlessness or vivid dreams
Precautions
Although sold as a supplement, huperzine A acts on the same enzyme as prescription dementia medicines, so it should not be combined with donepezil or similar drugs, and it can interact with medicines for glaucoma, asthma and heart rhythm. It is not suitable in pregnancy or for children. Memory problems that are progressing need a proper medical assessment, not a supplement.
