Hydroxyurea slows the production of blood cells in the bone marrow. In sickle cell disease it also raises the level of fetal haemoglobin, which makes red cells less likely to sickle, reducing painful crises and hospital admissions.

What Hydroxyurea Is Used For

  • Sickle cell disease, to reduce painful crises
  • Chronic myeloid leukaemia and other myeloproliferative conditions
  • Thalassaemia, in selected patients
  • Certain other cancers, as decided by a specialist

Common Side Effects

  • Low blood counts
  • Nausea and mouth ulcers
  • Darkening of the skin and nails
  • Leg ulcers with long term use

Precautions

Regular blood counts are essential and the dose is adjusted to them. Report fever, sore throat, unusual bruising or bleeding straight away. Handle the capsules carefully and wash your hands afterwards. It can harm an unborn baby, so effective contraception is needed by both men and women during treatment and for a period after.
