Lactobacillus Reuteri
Lactobacillus reuteri is a probiotic bacterium found naturally in the human gut. It is sold as drops, sachets and chewable tablets, and it is one of the better studied strains, particularly for infant colic and for diarrhoea.
What Lactobacillus Reuteri Is Used For
- Infant colic and excessive crying
- Diarrhoea, including after a course of antibiotics
- Regurgitation and feeding discomfort in babies
- General gut and digestive support
Common Side Effects
- Gas or bloating in the first days
- Mild change in stool pattern
- Rarely, stomach discomfort
Precautions
Probiotic drops are given away from very hot food or drink, and if antibiotics are being taken they are usually spaced a couple of hours apart. Check storage on the pack, as some products need refrigeration. Probiotics are not suitable for babies who are very premature or have a weakened immune system without a doctor advising it. Persistent crying, poor weight gain, blood in the stool or vomiting needs a doctor.
