METHOXSALEN
Methoxsalen makes skin far more sensitive to ultraviolet light. Given as a tablet or applied topically before controlled UVA exposure, that combination, known as PUVA, is used for vitiligo and psoriasis.
What Methoxsalen Is Used For
- Vitiligo, to encourage repigmentation
- Severe psoriasis not responding to other treatment
- Some other skin conditions treated with light therapy
Common Side Effects
- Redness and burning of treated skin
- Nausea with the tablets
- Itching and dryness
- Increased risk of skin ageing and skin cancer with long term use
Precautions
Light exposure must be measured and supervised in a clinic, because ordinary sunlight after taking it can cause severe burns. Protective eyewear is worn for the day of treatment, since the eyes are also sensitised and cataracts are a long term risk. Avoid sun exposure for the rest of the treatment day and report any blistering.
