Nalidixic acid is the original quinolone antibiotic. It concentrates in the urine rather than spreading through the body, which makes it useful for urinary infections and for some gut infections.

Urinary tract infections
Preventing recurrent urinary infection, in some cases
Bacillary dysentery, in certain settings

Nausea and abdominal discomfort
Headache and dizziness
Sensitivity to sunlight
Visual disturbance

Precautions

Resistance to this older antibiotic is now common, so a urine culture guides treatment better than guesswork. Avoid strong sunlight during the course. It is not suitable for people with a history of fits, and it is generally avoided in infants. Report any visual changes, tendon pain or unusual mood change. Drink plenty of water and complete the course.
