Natamycin is an antifungal used almost entirely in the eye, as a suspension of drops. It is the standard first treatment for fungal keratitis, an infection of the cornea that is a significant cause of eye damage in this region.

What Natamycin Is Used For

  • Fungal infection of the cornea
  • Fungal conjunctivitis and inflammation of the eyelid margin
  • Eye injury contaminated with plant or organic matter

Common Side Effects

  • Blurred vision after instilling
  • Eye irritation or stinging
  • Redness
  • A gritty feeling

Precautions

Fungal eye infection is serious and needs an eye specialist, with frequent drops at first and treatment often continuing for several weeks. Shake the bottle, as this is a suspension. Never wear contact lenses during treatment. Any eye injury from plant material, wheat chaff or soil that becomes painful, red or blurred should be seen the same day.
