NORETHISTERONE
Norethisterone is a progestogen. It stabilises the lining of the womb, which controls bleeding, and while it is being taken the lining is held in place, so a period does not start until the tablets stop.
What Norethisterone Is Used For
- Heavy or irregular periods
- Delaying a period for travel or an occasion
- Endometriosis
- Progestogen only contraception and part of HRT
Common Side Effects
- Breast tenderness
- Bloating and fluid retention
- Headache and mood changes
- Breakthrough spotting
Precautions
For delaying a period it is started a few days before the period is due and the period arrives shortly after stopping. It is not a contraceptive when used this way. Tell your doctor about previous blood clots, liver disease, migraine with aura or unexplained bleeding. Report calf pain or swelling, chest pain, breathlessness or a severe headache.
