Nortriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant that tends to cause less drowsiness and dry mouth than others in its class. Today it is prescribed most often at lower doses for nerve pain and migraine prevention.

What Nortriptyline Is Used For

  • Nerve pain, including diabetic neuropathy
  • Preventing migraine and tension headache
  • Depression
  • Chronic pain conditions

Common Side Effects

  • Dry mouth and constipation
  • Drowsiness, usually less than with amitriptyline
  • Blurred vision
  • Dizziness on standing

Precautions

Pain benefit builds over two to six weeks, so give it a fair trial before judging. Do not stop it abruptly after regular use. It affects heart rhythm and is dangerous in overdose, so store it securely and tell your doctor about any heart condition. Older adults are more prone to falls and confusion with this class.
