OXYBUTYNIN
Oxybutynin relaxes the bladder muscle so it stops contracting before it is full. That reduces the sudden urgent need to pass urine, the frequency and the leaks that follow it.
What Oxybutynin Is Used For
- Overactive bladder with urgency and frequency
- Urge incontinence
- Bedwetting in children, on medical advice
- Bladder spasm from neurological conditions
Common Side Effects
- Dry mouth, the most common complaint
- Constipation
- Blurred vision
- Drowsiness or confusion, particularly in older adults
Precautions
Tell your doctor if you have glaucoma, an enlarged prostate, or difficulty emptying the bladder, since these can worsen. Older adults are more sensitive to the confusion and falls it can cause, so lower doses or a different medicine may be preferred. Sipping water and sugar free gum help with dry mouth. Bladder training and cutting caffeine work alongside the tablets.
