Tinospora cordifolia, known as giloy or gurjo, is a climbing plant used in ayurvedic medicine. It is taken mainly for immunity and for recovery after fever, and it appears in many combination tonics.

What It Is Traditionally Used For

  • Immune support formulations
  • Recovery and convalescence after fever
  • Traditional use in joint discomfort
  • General tonics and syrups

Common Side Effects

  • Constipation
  • Lowering of blood sugar

Precautions

It may lower blood sugar, so people on diabetes medicines should monitor closely and check with their doctor. Cases of liver injury have been reported with prolonged use of some giloy products, so it is not for long uninterrupted courses, and yellowing of the eyes, dark urine or persistent nausea should be reported. It is generally avoided in pregnancy and in autoimmune disease.
