Lemon & Honey
Lemon and honey is the oldest home remedy for a sore throat, and honey has real evidence behind it for easing a night time cough, particularly in children over one year. Lemon adds vitamin C and cuts through the sweetness.
What It Is Used For
- Dry, tickly cough
- Sore throat and hoarseness
- Throat comfort during a cold
- Warm drinks, lozenges and syrup preparations
Common Side Effects
- Effect on blood sugar from the honey
- Acidity from lemon in people prone to reflux
- Tooth enamel wear with frequent acidic drinks
Precautions
Honey must never be given to a baby under one year old, because of the risk of infant botulism. People with diabetes should count the sugar. Rinse the mouth with plain water after acidic drinks to protect enamel. A cough lasting beyond two to three weeks, or one with blood, high fever, breathlessness or weight loss, needs a doctor.
