SEVELAMAR CARBONATE
Sevelamer carbonate binds phosphate from food inside the gut so that less of it is absorbed. It is prescribed for people on dialysis or with advanced kidney disease, whose kidneys can no longer clear phosphate from the blood.
What Sevelamer Carbonate Is Used For
- High blood phosphate in chronic kidney disease
- Patients on haemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
- Protecting bone and blood vessels from the effects of excess phosphate
Common Side Effects
- Nausea and vomiting
- Constipation or loose motions
- Bloating and indigestion
Precautions
It only works if taken with meals, because it has to meet the phosphate in the food. Swallow the tablets whole rather than crushing them. Sevelamer can reduce absorption of some other medicines and of fat soluble vitamins, so spacing them apart is usual. Blood phosphate and calcium are checked regularly.
