Intimate washes are mild cleansers formulated for the external genital area, usually at a lower pH than ordinary soap. They clean the vulva without stripping it the way strongly perfumed soap can.

What You Will Find Here

  • pH balanced daily intimate washes
  • Lactic acid based formulations
  • Fragrance free options for sensitive skin
  • Washes marketed for use during periods

Using Them Sensibly

  • External use only, on the vulva, never inside the vagina
  • Plain water is enough for many women
  • Fragrance free suits sensitive or irritated skin best

Precautions

Douching or washing inside the vagina disturbs the natural balance and increases the risk of infection, so it should be avoided entirely. The vagina cleans itself. Unusual discharge, an odour, itching, burning, bleeding between periods or pain needs a diagnosis, since thrush, bacterial vaginosis and other infections each need different treatment and no wash will fix them.
