Baby Diaper Size Guide: How to Choose the Right Size and Avoid Leaks

Newborn baby for a diaper size guide

Few things frustrate new parents more than a diaper that leaks every night, or one that leaves red marks on the thighs. In most cases the cause is not the brand, it is the size. Babies grow quickly, and a diaper that fitted last month may now be too small. Picking the right size keeps your baby dry, comfortable and protected from rashes.

This guide explains how diaper sizes work, how to tell if the size is right, how many diapers a baby uses, and how to choose between brands available at Khasmart.

How diaper sizes work

Diaper sizes are based mostly on weight, because weight predicts the fit around the waist and thighs better than age. The numbers vary between brands, so always read the weight range on the pack. These typical ranges give you an idea:

  • Newborn: up to about 4 or 5 kg.
  • Small (size 1 to 2): about 3 to 8 kg.
  • Medium (size 3): about 6 to 11 kg.
  • Large (size 4): about 9 to 14 kg.
  • Extra large (size 5): about 12 to 17 kg.
  • XXL (size 6): about 15 kg and above.

Babies between two sizes should usually go up, not down, as long as the diaper still sits snugly at the waist.

Signs the diaper is too small

  • Red marks or indentations on the waist or thighs.
  • The tabs barely reach, or you have to stretch them to fasten.
  • Frequent leaks from the sides or at the top of the back.
  • The diaper rides low and does not cover the bottom.
  • Your baby seems fussy when it is put on.

Signs the diaper is too big

  • Gaps at the legs or waist.
  • Leaks out of the leg openings, especially when your baby sits up or lies on the side.
  • The diaper sags between the legs.
  • The tabs have to be fastened right at the edge.

How to put on a diaper properly

  1. Clean your baby’s bottom and pat dry.
  2. Place the open diaper under the baby, with the tabs at waist level.
  3. Bring the front up between the legs, and fasten the tabs evenly, snug enough to fit but loose enough to slip two fingers inside.
  4. Fluff out the leg frills so that they do not fold inwards. That is a common cause of leaks.
  5. For baby boys, point the penis downwards to prevent leaks over the top.
  6. For newborns, fold the front of the diaper below the umbilical stump until it heals.

How many diapers does a baby use?

  • Newborns: eight to twelve a day, as they feed often.
  • Two to six months: six to eight a day.
  • Six months and older: five to seven a day, depending on feeding and sleep.

Change a diaper as soon as it is soiled, and every two to three hours otherwise. Fewer wet diapers than usual may be a sign of dehydration, especially if your baby has diarrhoea or vomiting. See our guide to nappy rash for how to protect the skin.

Tips to choose well

  • Buy a small pack first when you try a new brand or size.
  • Check the fit, not only the label. Every baby’s shape is different.
  • Choose soft, breathable diapers with a wetness indicator if you like, and avoid scented ones if your baby has sensitive skin.
  • Use night-time diapers with more absorbency if your baby wakes wet.
  • Store them in a cool, dry place. Damp diapers lose absorbency.
  • Use wipes without alcohol or strong perfume, or plain water and cotton wool.

Rashes and sensitive skin

Even with the perfect size, some babies get a rash. If you see redness, try changing more often, giving some diaper-free time and using a zinc oxide barrier cream. Our guide to baby skin care in winter has tips for dry, chapped skin as well.

Disposing of diapers

Roll up the used diaper, fasten the tabs and place it in a covered bin. Do not flush it. Wash your hands afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

When should I move up a size?

When leaks become frequent, there are red marks on the skin, or the tabs barely close. Also check your baby’s weight against the pack.

Can I use a newborn diaper on a baby of two months?

If it still fits well, yes. Some babies move to size small by four to six weeks.

Is it better to buy a bigger size so that I do not need to buy again?

No. A diaper that is too big leaks and does not protect the skin.

Do diapers delay toilet training?

Diapers do not cause delayed training. Children are ready at their own pace, often between two and three years.
