Albumin is the main protein in blood plasma. It holds fluid inside the blood vessels and carries many substances around the body. The medicinal form is prepared from donated human plasma and given as an infusion in hospital.

What Human Albumin Is Used For

Low blood albumin with fluid overload in liver disease
After drainage of large volumes of abdominal fluid
Severe burns and some critical illness
Certain procedures such as plasma exchange

Flushing and chills during infusion
Fever
Nausea
Fluid overload if given too quickly

Precautions

It is given only under medical supervision with monitoring, because too rapid an infusion can overload the circulation, particularly in heart or kidney disease. It is a blood derived product prepared with viral inactivation steps. Low albumin from poor nutrition is corrected with food and treatment of the cause, not with infusions.
