Aluminium hydroxide neutralises acid already sitting in the stomach, so it works within minutes. It is usually combined with magnesium hydroxide, because the two balance out each others effect on the bowel.

Precautions

Antacids bind many other medicines, including antibiotics, iron and thyroid tablets, so leave at least two hours between them. They relieve symptoms but do not heal an ulcer or treat the cause. Heartburn several times a week, difficulty swallowing, vomiting, weight loss or black stools needs proper assessment. People with kidney disease should use aluminium containing products only on medical advice.
