Cefixime is a third generation cephalosporin taken by mouth as tablets or suspension. It breaks down the cell wall bacteria need to survive, and it is widely used for chest, urinary and typhoid infections.

What Cefixime Is Used For

  • Urinary tract infections
  • Chest, throat and ear infections
  • Typhoid fever
  • Some sexually transmitted infections

Common Side Effects

  • Loose motions, the most common complaint
  • Nausea and abdominal pain
  • Skin rash
  • Thrush after longer courses

Precautions

Tell your doctor about any previous reaction to penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics. Complete the full course even after the fever settles, because stopping early leaves the resistant bacteria behind. Suspensions are shaken well and stored as the label says, often refrigerated after mixing. Report severe or bloody diarrhoea during or after the course.
